Emme Menopause

Zoe Ball on being hot, hairy and hilarious

For those of us going through – or close to going through – the menopause, Zoe Ball is arguably best known for her time as TV’s Live and Kicking co-presenter and Radio 2 DJ.

That said, the star has an accolade of successes under her belt – not least that she was the first female host of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Well, she has just repeated her record by becoming the first woman to host the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, following fellow DJ Chris Evans’ departure.

The trailblazing daughter of Johnny Ball – also a tv presenter, famous for making science fun – Zoe also presents the It Takes Two show, which gives fans all the inside gossip on the ever-popular Strictly Come Dancing programme.

One thing is for sure: Ms Ball certainly doesn’t come across as the shy and retiring type. She appears to be full energy. And fun. So, it is no surprise that her take on the menopause was: “I am hot and hairy. I feel like it’s sort of my last hurrah. Is it going to get better? Do I do HRT? Have more sex?”

Speaking at the Leicester Square theatre in London in 2017, at the age of 46, Zoe revealed how she was going through “the change”.

She went on to say: “Good tip – [have] HRT and more sex.”

One of the symptoms of the menopause can be a reduced sex drive. The NHS confirms this can be due to ‘falling levels of sex hormones (oestrogen and testosterone) just before, during and after the menopause in women.’

The National Health Service website advises talking ‘to your GP if you’re concerned about this.’ And also confirms that treatments are available, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
